With cold winds, grey skies and rainy weather, it’s the season to curl up with a good book and a nice cup of coffee. The early titles in 2022 offer something for readers of every preference, whether you are interested in understanding our moment through rigorous nonfiction or escaping it with otherworldly stories.

We bring you the list of the most anticipated new releases of 2022.

1) Everything the Light Touches by Janice Pariat

In a new novel from the author of The Nine-Chambered Heart, the author weaves together subjects like botany, history, and fascinating storytelling along with various characters. Characters like a young Indian woman who travels through the North-eastern regions of India, a Cambridge student inspired by Goethe’s writings, and Goethe himself who travels through Italy in the 1780s.

2) The Book of Everlasting Things by Aanchal Malhotra

Having written Remnants of a Separation: A History of the Partition through Material Memory, Anchal Malhotra has entered the fiction world with her 2022 publication. A book that explores Indian soldiers’ roles in World War I, this work continues the theme of Partition. It is a book of strong emotions of longing, love, and strength.

3) City of Incident: A Novel in Twelve Parts by Annie Zaidi

The author of Prelude to a Riot connects six men and six women living in a metropolitan city and their struggles in the twilight years. Multiple-award winner, her writing has astonished us in the past and there’s no reason why it won’t do the same again this year.

4) The Candy House By Jennifer Egan

A Black tech visionary developing a software program that can access family memories, Bix Bouton aims to satisfy his appetite for knowledge and enrich the lives of his family. Cyberspace has its risks and rewards, but Egan’s technical brio enriches her timely and humane novel. It hints at the risks and rewards that await us in the brave new world of coding.

5) The Immortal King Rao, by Vauhini Vara

The ethical questions of our time are addressed by Vara in this thrilling speculative fiction about capitalism, consciousness, and ties that bind. Athena Rao, the daughter of King Rao, an entrepreneur famous in the technology industry, is accused of murdering her father. Throughout Athena’s defence, the story travels back in time to her father’s traumatic childhood in India, all the way to his meteoric rise and eventual fall. Vara’s sci-fi vision of techno-capitalism gone amok is vividly imagined, but it is the beating heart of the novel that will pull you in.
